JOB SUMMARY

The University of Connecticut, Information Technology Services (ITS), is seeking a highly technical and self-motivated Desktop Support Technician (Computer Support Technician 2). This service-oriented position supports University Safety locations across the state.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Responsible for operations, daily management, and planning of information technology services for the division.
  • Serve as a liaison for IT services between department staff across the division and other teams within University Information Technology Services (ITS).
  • Analyze, record, and track software and hardware issues using the central ticketing system, Jira Service Desk.
  • Resolve complex software and hardware problems, and work with users to troubleshoot and implement solutions.
  • Collaborate and Escalate issues within ITS to resolve issues related to server, network, AV, and account support.
  • Develop procedures, techniques, or programs to improve the performance and efficiency of software and hardware systems. Use various software and hardware tools, install software and/or hardware, and write/share documentation for hardware, software and tools.
  • Configure and deploy computers and necessary peripheral devices.
  • Install and configure appropriate software and functions according to university and manufacturer specifications.
  • Ensure security and privacy of university computer systems.
  • Perform regular upgrades to ensure systems remain updated and secure.
  • Maintain records/logs of repairs and fixes and maintenance schedule for all computers using the central ticketing system.
  • Identify computer needs of staff and place orders to meet those needs.
  • Work with vendors and division leadership to develop or enhance new systems.
  • Respond to inquiries from staff and assist them in the installation, upgrade, troubleshooting and maintenance of computing devices.
  • Develop plans and processes to ensure the availability of IT services or systems in the division.
  • Contribute to technical projects pertaining to information technology services.
  • Maintain confidentiality and integrity of information in compliance with University Information Security Policies.
  • Provide support coverage during non-business hours if necessary and provide support on EOC activations for which IT is requested as response/standby.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with University Safety vendors to assist with troubleshooting of technical issues software, hardware, or systems. Work with vendors to aid in the selection of new software and technology for the division.
  • May participate in, and provide information for, University Safety strategic planning processes.
  • Resolve complex system integration of multiple applications internally (ie. workstations and servers) and externally, such as in cruisers, apparatus, or regional/off-site facilities.
  • Ensure compliance with University IT policies and security. Ensure compliance with law enforcement CALEA guidelines for IT to maintain departments accreditation.
  • Maintain, foster, and aid in establishing CT/CJIS/FBI Data Security and Networking compliance as it relates to laws, regulations and protocols, to include COLLECT, CJIS, and Federal Statutes.
  • Aid and maintain user access to University Safety doors through building access management software.
  • Perform related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Associate's degree in Computer Science/related field with six years of related experience; OR Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/related field with four years of related experience; OR eight years of related experience.
  2. Demonstrated comprehensive knowledge of multiple technologies used to support computing at a higher education institution.
  3. Detailed understanding of the procedures and strategies used in academic support technology focus areas (e.g., faculty support, help desk, computer labs, MVS/VM products, networking, PC labs, regional campus support, research support and programming, training and development).
  4. Demonstrated knowledge of Windows, Mac OS and iOS; Microsoft Office and related software applications; personal device configuration; personal device management; printer setup and maintenance; file services and system administration concepts.
  5. Demonstrated thorough knowledge of internet security and data privacy.
  6. Demonstrated written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  7. Proven ability to work independently.
  8. Demonstrated troubleshooting skills.
  9. Demonstrated ability to interpret end-user needs and act on them quickly.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  1. At least one year of experience in IT project management.
  2. Experience with computer hardware repair.
  3. Experience with network support (Switches, IP configurations, etc.).
  4. Experience with firewall support (Port traffic, rules for inbound/outbound traffic, etc.).
  5. Experience with Body Worn Cameras and In-Car camera systems.
  6. Experience with Mobile Data Terminals, in-car modems and VPN tunnels.
  7. Demonstrated ability to write basic scripts.
  8. Experience using Microsoft Intune / Autopilot.
  9. Experience administering, securing, and upgrading Windows workstations.

JOB SUMMARY

CEN, through UConn Information Technology Services (ITS), is seeking two (2) Network Engineers to join our Network Services team. Reporting to the Network Services Manager, you’ll manage a Tier 2 service-provider network offering services such as dedicated internet, internet, exchange peering, content caching, l2/3 VPNs, cloud connect onramps, managed firewall, hosted DNS, content filtering, and more.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Network Engineer (Network Administrator 2)

  • Ensure the continuous, uninterrupted availability, security, and functionality of the network.
  • Perform installation, provisioning, and decommissioning of devices and services.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve network related problems, occasionally under extreme pressure.
  • Manage timely response to service requests and incidents within ticketing systems.
  • Produce and maintain diagrams, records, as-built documentation, and operating procedures.
  • Maintain and monitor inventory, assets, and tracking of equipment, parts, and materials.
  • Participate in on-call rotation, including after-hours escalation support as needed.
  • Maintain vendor relationships, manage contract installations, and liaise with end users.
  • Lead, execute, and contribute to all aspects of projects from inception to completion.
  • Create, debug, test, and deploy network automation scripts and programming languages.
  • Contribute to and execute business continuity/disaster recovery plans as needed.

  • Lead long-range planning of the overall network, architecture, security, and capacity.
  • Lead outage resolution and post incident reviews including detailed root cause analysis.
  • Lead design and implement complex network systems including physical and logical topology.
  • Lead business continuity/disaster recovery planning, testing, and execution.
  • Present network plans to management staff/key stakeholders aligning strategy and need.
  • Serve final as escalation point for incidents, requests, design reviews, and vendor escalations.
  • Mentor and guide junior engineering staff and help with cross-team competency.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) on optical, packet, security, and/or cloud services.
  • Write technical specifications and requirements for procurements needs and documents.
  • Perform other duties as required.

  • Physical Demands:  This position involves extended periods of sitting and the extensive use of computer and the office equipment.  May involve stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or working on step ladders.  Involves close vision, color vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.  Must be able to lift 40 lbs. to shoulder height and must have a valid license and ability to drive.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Network Engineer (Network Administrator 2)

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in a related field and 4 years of related experience, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  2. Experience leveraging BGP, OSPF, and/or ISIS in medium to large scale enterprise networks.
  3. Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills.
  4. Demonstrated understanding of OSI Layers 1 – 4 and TCP/IP protocols.
  5. Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot complex inter-related network systems.

Senior Network Engineer (Network Administrator 3) (Inclusive of Network Engineer)

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in STEM and 6 years of directly related experience, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  2. 3 years’ total experience must have been as the lead or senior network engineer in support of a large-scale network.
  3. Experience leveraging MPLS and traffic engineering.
  4. Experience leveraging VRFs in complex network environments.
  5. Proven experience in providing high profile outage resolution and post incident reviews.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Network Engineer (Network Administrator 2)

  1. Master’s Degree (MD) in a related field.
  2. 5+ years’ experience in an enterprise network environment or Service Provider network.
  3. CCNP, or equivalent level certification or better, Service Provider track preferred.

JOB SUMMARY

The University of Connecticut seeks a proactive and skilled programmer/analyst to join the Information Technology Services (ITS) team as a Software Developer 2. In this full-time position, you will play a pivotal role in supporting, developing, and optimizing enterprise applications and integrations that drive university operations. You will collaborate closely with technical and business stakeholders, vendors, and management to diagnose and resolve system errors, enhance system functionality, and ensure seamless integration across platforms. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THE SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR 1 LEVEL

  • Operational Maintenance: Assist with the routine patching, software installation, and hardware maintenance of Windows and Linux servers.
  • Script Execution: Run and perform minor updates to existing PowerShell scripts to maintain operational workflows for Engineering services.
  • M365 Support: Assist with the administration of Office 365 user services, including basic troubleshooting of Teams sites and the management of distribution lists.
  • Monitoring & Remediation: Monitor system health and security alerts; follow established protocols to remediate common vulnerabilities.
  • End-User Assistance: Provide Tier 1 technical support for faculty and staff, escalating complex issues to senior administrators.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THE SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR 2 LEVEL

  • System Lifecycle Management: Independently manage the full lifecycle of Windows and Linux servers, including architectural design, installation, complex upgrades, and advanced troubleshooting.
  • Automation Development: Design, author, and maintain advanced PowerShell code and automation modules for Engineering and Office 365 services (e.g., automated Teams provisioning).
  • Security & Policy Leadership: Lead vulnerability management efforts for the college; develop and enforce local security policies in alignment with university-wide standards.
  • Strategic Analysis: Review and analyze existing departmental services for potential centralization or migration to cloud-based infrastructure.
  • Project Leadership: Lead small-to-medium IT projects from conception to completion, ensuring system reliability and high-level performance for critical infrastructure.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR 1 LEVEL

  • Education & Experience
    • Six (6) years of directly related IT experience, OR
    • Associate’s degree plus four (4) years of related experience, OR
    • Bachelor’s degree plus two (2) years of related experience.
  • PowerShell Basics: Demonstrated ability to use PowerShell for routine administrative tasks and the capacity to read and update existing scripts to maintain operational workflows.
  • Server Maintenance & Support: Demonstrated knowledge of Linux environments.  Experience assisting with server patching, basic software installations, and routine troubleshooting under the guidance of senior staff.
  • Systems Knowledge: Demonstrated understanding of how systems and applications interact and stated interest in learning system workflows and assisting with the implementation of pre-designed solutions.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Demonstrated analytical thinking with the ability to follow technical documentation to resolve common hardware and software issues.

ADDITIONAL MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR 2 LEVEL

  • Education & Experience
    • Eight (8) years of directly related IT experience, OR
    • Associate’s degree in a relevant field plus six (6) years of related experience, OR
    • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field plus four (4) years of related experience.
  • PowerShell expertise: Demonstrated ability to manage existing code and create new scripts as needed.
  • Windows / Linux server expertise: Experience fully managing Windows and Linux servers from installation, upgrading, software installs, patching, and troubleshooting.
  • Microsoft 365 Knowledge: Experience with or demonstrated understanding of services such as Teams, SharePoint, and Distribution lists.
  • Proven knowledge of system design/analysis, application design/development.
  • Demonstrated in critical thinking, problem-solving, and analysis.
  • Demonstrated written communication and documentation skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR 1 LEVEL

  • Microsoft 365 Knowledge: Experience with or demonstrated understanding of services such as Teams, SharePoint, and Distribution lists.
  • Data Literacy: Experience with data entry, data cleanup, or generating standard reports from existing systems.
  • Database Fundamentals: Demonstrated familiarity with SQL concepts, such as running basic queries or understanding the structure of a relational database.
  • Version Control Awareness: Exposure to version control concepts (like Git) or an understanding of the basic software development lifecycle (SDLC).
  • Linux System Maintenance: Demonstrated familiarity with Linux package management and configuration (e.g., using Yum/Apt) or exposure to centralized management tools.
  • Foundational Security & Networking: Demonstrated understanding of networking protocols (TCP/IP, DNS), firewalls, and the importance of security practices like Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).
  • Automation Interest: Exposure to automation concepts or basic configuration management tools; willingness to learn platforms like Ansible.
  • Institutional Experience: Previous experience working in a structured office environment, customer service role, or a student-worker position within an IT department.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR 2 LEVEL

  • Experience with Data management and reporting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft SQL database management.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and repositories.
  • Experience with RedHat Satellite or puppet
  • Demonstrated knowledge of intermediate/advanced infrastructure and security topics including networking, firewalls, threat detection, configuration management, vulnerability analysis, and multifactor authentication
  • Experience with Ansible or Ansible Automation Platform
  • Higher Education Experience: Previous experience in a higher education IT environment.
